Petrified wood is basically a log made of stone, I know, stone! It's made when logs get underwater and are unable to get air. When volcano's in the area erupt the ash they expel combines with the water or rain around it to create silica! The silica finds it's way into the cells of the trapped wood, when this happens the silica transforms the cell into crystals creating petrified wood!
Then we went to the painted desert is what it sounds you can't explain properly so here are a pic to show you.
