As some of you might have noticed we've learned lots of pointless trivia (interesting, yes - but really I've managed for 40+ years without some of this vital stuff). Just fascinating stuff about the American Tobacco Company and the Duke family. Like, did you know that there is several ways to process tobacco? And that the Duke family hardly used it. And, really who among you can say that they've seen the largest collection of spittoons and cuspidors in the entire world? Makes you wonder how I've lived 40 some odd years, doesn't it!?
And while I'm at it - previous posts failed to mention that a slave that had been trained in a trade (blacksmithing, tinning, weaving, etc.) might sell for $1000 in Thomas Jefferson's day. That's a LOT of money! Especially when you compare that to T.J.'s $200 hand-made wooden-parquet floor (did I mention that it is probably the first parquet floor in the US?).
Pretty amazing stuff, I know...yesterday was...well...um...not so much...
Maybe here is where a picture will speak a thousand words:
So - you may be thinking, "Spare us...after all, we are not your children and we can't be forced to suffer at your hand as these poor young ones." But no, I will press on and share with you the ground-breaking info I gathered yesterday!
A visit to Camden's Revolutionary War Site reaped this interesting fact: a 'dog-trot' refers to an open-air passage between two rooms that share a common roof (where the dogs trotted). See - that wasn't soooo painful!
Oh and one more interesting thing - there's a diorama depicting Gen. Gates' headquarters and if you look carefully you'll find a dog scratching it's fleas. Really, no kidding.
Ok, ok...one more thing: Andrew Jackson watched the battle of Hobkicks (or something like that) from the crack in a door as he was in jail! (The British jailed him as a teenager.)
Well, what can I say? Except, the company was superb and today is a two-fer. Maybe you'll your moneys-worth later on with Micah.
