4 Funky Things from Kansas

1. We've visited several custard places on our journey.  Today we added another, and it begs the question: which is better the custard place near Bonnie's mom's house, the one in Salt Lake City  or Freddy's (a burger joint all along the I-70 corridor). Drum roll please. The Custard Cup (near Bonnie's mom's)!  Really yummy!!!  Freddy's take second and SLC is the loser (but of course Rocky Mountain Pizza makes SLC worth the visit, who needs custard?).

2.  As we drove (and drove, and drove) today there was a fire along the side of the road.  We saw the smoke from a distance, but there are always smoke trails made by trucks moving alone the dirt roads in the fields.  This one was bigger, and thicker...but it wasn't until we were right up on it that we understood what was happening.  It was scary for mom to drive through it; we couldn't see a thing!  But it only lasted a minute or two and was pretty cool when it was all over.

3.  And check this out - we drove on the first interstate ever opened!  Yep!  About 20 miles of I-70 outside of Topeka...the sign said it was the first ever interstate.  Pretty cool.

4.  We had this whole blog planned that would allow us to pick on Kansas (you know: so flat, so boring, so straight), but it really wasn't so bad (even with an overcast, dreary day)!  Did you know that 1 Kansas farmer feeds 128 people?  Did you know that Dwight Eisenhower was born here?  Did you know that several astronauts were born in Kansas?  It's not so bad!  Really...
First interstate opened!

So Long,
Dyl (and everyone)

  1. Dyl...the skies in Kansas looked
pretty blue and clear except in
the smoke...did you wash the windows?
You are missing record heat here...
    poor kids in school buildings....
    bring some midwest rainstorms home
with you....so much for talking about
    the weather...did you visit the
    Eisenhower library?
